Cognition and motion have been shown to be highly related, but traditional methods of assessing motion (specifically gait) have been confined to the laboratory due to the use of fixed motion capture setups. We have developed a smartphone based approach to the assessment of gait dynamics that allows us to study gait in more natural environments. This technique allows us to examine the ways in which naturally occurring attentional load affects the way we walk. For example, do natural and urban environments impose different attentional demands, and does that then lead to a change in our gait dynamics?
